Municipal Funding

As a former city council member, I know that when our local leaders are empowered to make decisions and allocate resources for the communities they serve, our neighborhoods thrive. In Lansing, I am fighting for increased revenue sharing with municipalities and to close the “dark store” loophole that is depriving our towns and cities of essential revenue.

Right now, big box stores are able to undervalue their property resulting in them paying less in taxes than what their building is actually worth. Not only does this result in a loss of revenue for the municipality that the store is located in, but it also causes the property tax rates of nearby homes to increase, placing the burden on taxpayers.

I am committed to addressing this and other inequities in our tax code. Our state must protect its municipalities which are responsible for providing residents with essential city services, supplying our clean water, and keeping our neighborhoods safe.
